At SMS, students have the opportunity to attend various enrichment-style electives 4 days per week. Teachers are asked to choose an enrichment activity outside of their academic discipline that they are passionate about and would like to share with the students. Since I teach Earth Science and have a soft spot in my heart for encouraging people, it seemed appropriate that I would offer a class in Rock Painting. The students are extremely excited about sharing encouraging words with their classmates through rock painting. They can hardly wait to paint words such as, "Believe in Yourself" and "You are Amazing" on rocks and hide them outside on campus so others can find them and be encouraged. Once a rock is found, students can return it to me where we will talk about what is written on their rock. They will leave my classroom with their favorite candy, their rock, and hopefully, an encouraging attitude.
