No self-respecting 8th grader wants to be seen with a 4th or 5th grade level book. Students want to read books with characters like them who are facing problems and issues they have experienced themselves. The Bluford High series allows them to do just that. I have seen the most reluctant readers get hooked on the Bluford High series. It follows characters throughout the trials and tribulations of junior high and high school. Students fall in love with the characters; when they finish one book, students rush to find another to continue their favorite character's story. These books are written at a lower reading level so students can successfully read them independently, but they look and read like young adult/teen novels. Having multiple copies of each book in the series allows multiple students to read the same book at one time, which can lead to valuable interactions and discussions between students.
