Students learn best when they are supported, and validated. Relationships are at the heart of therapeutic work, and being able to offer my students a comfortable space where they feel supported can help lay the foundation for a supportive therapeutic relationship. Counseling requires us to trust in the safety of exploring our emotional reactions to lived experience, and research demonstrates that we are most able to be open to vulnerability when we feel comfortable and protected. Providing creative outlets for expression within this environment will help empower students to explore and challenge their understanding of themselves, and the world around them. The CBT-based curriculum materials will provide accessible opportunities for collaborative learning in sessions with me. The crafts and supplies will provide creative outlets for expression as students work towards their goals. This a brand-new-to-me office space, and a completely blank slate with so much potential. I hope that these materials will set us on the path to building a safe space in which we can form strong relationships!
