Chemistry is a challenging subject for many students and in fact many of their parents had a tough time in chemistry when they were a student themselves. Long gone are the days of a teacher standing in front of a room delivering a lecture while students take notes and work out practice problems from an example. Today, students need to engage in the science practices and other hands-on methods to help make chemistry more concrete and real. The magnet shapes and magnet boards that this project will make will allow students to seen and move items around to create a visual of what's happening. I know that students gain a deeper understanding of what's going on chemically when they can see and use manipulatives to model what they can't see. I plan on creating magnetic boards using this magnetic paint and durable cardboard (a colleague swears cardboard works the best) and use the magnetic sheets to create various atoms and other chemical materials to help students with chemistry concepts throughout the year. The tools that this project will help provide will not only impact the 300 students this year, but that many students (or more) for years to come!
