Currently, my students do not see themselves as lifelong readers and writers. School for them is purely a place they're required to go. Many of them admit that they have not read a book in years, if ever. I am trying to change this by providing book options that actually appeal to their tastes. Books are mirrors and windows and my current options for them are opaque. I want to give them title options that allow them to see themselves and give them a path to literacy. In my dreams, of course, I would be handing these students selections from the western canon and they would automatically love them. But we don't live in such a dream world. The end goal is to make them lifelong readers and writers so they can see themselves achieving more.
