English language learners (ELL) (ESL) in Arizona are students who have been tested and do not meet English fluency expectations. Our fifth grade class has seven English language learners of mixed abilities. These students are in direct need of a program that allows them to translate assignments in real-time, which will allow our school to close the achievement gap for this population.
I am requesting four Android tablets to break down the barriers that ELL students face when experiencing full English immersion at school. Android tablets will allow students to use the program Google Lens, which translates any document in real-time while keeping vital formatting. Students have the ability to display their knowledge accurately, in their preferred language.
Since the passing of Arizona Proposition 203, students are now able to receive instruction and resources in their native language. This comes with additional funding providing smaller class sizes and after-school tutoring. Yet, there is still a need for an immediate solution to the language barrier.
Several of my students are unable to complete assignments, regardless of ability, because of their ELL status. Providing one tablet per two ELL students will allow every fifth grade student at our elementary school an equal opportunity at success!
