In Colorado, science and social studies are not graded in 1st grade, so it tends to get pushed aside! I, on the other hand, enjoy science and engineering, and believe that the students need hands-on activities to really grasp an understanding of how the world works! Our 1st-grade team designates Fridays as a fun building and exploring time for all three classes. We all get together and all three classes have time to build and explore. Because I am a new teacher this year, I don't have materials to contribute to the activities or for my students to use on their own time! I hope to give them many opportunities of their own with these materials!
