It is no secret when students are represented within the classroom they not only succeed but they are more engaged. I currently teach in a district where 87% of the students I serve are students of color and face a number of hardships in their community. To make my classroom more inclusive through literature, I am able to engage students in the content on a deeper level. My students have a passion for reading and building a classroom library that is representative of their experiences and representation will propel their learning. I am committed to diversity, inclusivity, and belonging in my classroom and students learn a number of valuable lessons through literature. Additionally, I have included Social Emotional Learning literature to aid students in self-regulating their emotions. SEL helps students come to the best student they can be and is a valuable part of my teaching. Representation in my classroom is essential to engage students with reading.
