Rekenreks are wonderful tools that engage students in hands-on learning to strengthen their number sense starting in the early grades and continuing throughout each grade level. Students will be able to use rekenreks as a class with their classroom teacher during math, during small group activities, during math extension activities, and during individual interventions. Confident mathematicians start with having strong number sense. In the younger grades, students will use rekenreks to learn about numbers up to 5. They will be able to show 5 in different ways, count up to 5, and add numbers to get to 5. Then, students will learn the importance of numbers up until 10 by counting, subitizing, showing 10 in multiple ways, and adding and subtracting. Students will then be able to use the rekenreks to represent numbers up to 20. There are many different activities to strengthen number sense that students will get to experience using rekenreks. I hope to help my students see that they can become confident mathematicians!
