I teach in an inner city school. My students are predominantly Hispanic. My class is an accelerated first grade class. They are very bright and inquisitive. All are reading between 3rd grade level to 6th grade level. Since our school district does not test the students for the Gifted Program till 2nd grade, my class does not qualify for any additional funds that identified Gifted classes would normally receive. This is why we make use with what we have. Most of their parents are working immigrants. Few can help their children because of the language barrier. These students are motivated to learn, and always come to school eager and ready, despite the gang shootings and lock downs that we have at school.
