First graders are busy and benefit from movement. Having a large rug in our classroom will provide a space for students to move to and from during a variety of lessons and activities. We will use it for phonics lessons, small group reading instruction, brain breaks, direction giving, class discussions, morning meeting, and closing circle. Having a rug in our classroom will also facilitate community in a variety of ways. It will give our room a more 'homey' feel and will represent a safe space to gather together. My hope is that having a rug to meet on will help students know that there is always a space for them in our classroom, no matter what is happening in the world around them.
