Because of the unique challenges this particular group of students experiences, they are in need of social emotional supports and mental health support. Our school has adopted Social Emotional Learning, but it is still a new concept to our school. As a new full time counselor, I am able to go into every classroom at least once per month to help facilitate and grow students' resiliency, coping skills, mindsets, and improve connectedness to school and learning. I have requested Teachers Pay Teachers gift cards so I can purchase resources that I can use to improve my students' social and emotional development. Some of the lessons I will purchase and create are: friendships and social skills, self-management, respect for self and others, perspective taking, Kindness Week, diversity, equity and inclusion and much more. Additionally, I will be meeting with students individually for counseling services as well as running several small groups throughout the year. My goal is to ensure that all of my 600+ students know who I am, how I can help them and how they can access me when they are in times of need. While they are at our school, I will strive to meet students where they are and build them up as the wonderful individuals they are.
