My students are about 99% African-American students who come from a economically disadvantaged background. Many of these kids have never traveled out of their neighborhoods. They are wonderful students who look up to anyone who allows them the opportunity to be successful. Our state tests scores in Science went from 79% Passing Rate to a 93% Passing rate in my first year at this school. I do believe this was through awareness. Making them look outside of the box or textbook or their neighborhood for that matter as far as science was concerned.
