The books written and illustrated by Duncan Tonatiuh provide opportunities to learn about the Mexican culture and the Mexican-American experience. Students from K-2 can read ‘Dear Primo’ and learn about cousins living in different countries. 3rd-5th graders can read about Mexican fables and myths, such as ‘Pancho Rabbit and the Coyote’ as well as true stories about Mexican-Americans including Sylvia Mendez and Jose de la Luz. Also, students may learn about artists Jose Guadalupe Posada, Diego Rivera and study the illustrations of Duncan Tonatiuh. As a school wide author study, students in all grades may share with each other and their families what they have learned.
