When working with numbers, scholars must understand the why before the how. That is why hands-on place value and math manipulatives will enable my scholars to physically build and create numbers, add, subtract, and multiply. The purpose is to educate conceptually before performing the traditional way of using numbers. For example, scholars can build the number 100 by using 10 sets of 10 rods. Next, they will understand that adding 10 10s will equal 100. Finally, students will be able to use the dry erase boards to perform basic math calculations.
