Students will benefit from this experience in so many ways. They will explore the complex causes and effects of our modern-day opioid epidemic and be able dissect a well-written argument while learning to think critically about persuasion itself. Along the way, they will learn the dark, terrifying truth of the addiction itself and be informed enough to never fall accidentally into that situation. They will use this text to analyze and apply the fundamental skills of presenting argumentative reasoning and evidence. All adolescents, regardless of their background or their future, benefit from knowing these facts and from unpacking something so complicated and relevant to their lives.
