One of the best things about Hawaii is our diversity! My students represent many, many different cultures from all over the world as well as our shared culture of Hawaii. One of my favorite activities to do at the beginning and end of the year is a self-portrait. These resources will take my self-portrait activity from a fun activity to a very meaningful exploration of who we are and how we relate to those around us who are similar and different. I'm requesting a number of books to explore skin color in a meaningful, but age-appropriate way. These books teach acceptance and love, not only of others but ourselves as well! The skin tone colored pencils help students feel seen and create a self-portrait that feels authentic.
