Students will use these books during independent reading time. Independent reading time is used to provide students a safe and quiet space to read books, as many students do not have that space at home. Inviting students to have choice in their reading material, from a class library, helps students discover their own interests and identity. Living in southern California, it is important to provide students with literature that displays diverse narratives so that they can learn more about themselves as well as many of the students they interact with each day at school.
