My goal for the school year is to help each of my gifted students grow and expand his/her respective vocabulary. Our daily schedule includes a word study block. During this time, students will learn to study prefixes, suffixes, and Greek/Latin root words. Although we live in a time where technology has mostly replaced bound dictionaries, searching words on the internet is not always the safest option for elementary-aged children, nor does it help students build dictionary usage skills. Additionally, the internet tends to hold many temptations that may distract students from their tasks. The dictionaries will provide students with the opportunity to strengthen their vocabularies during our structured exploration of the English language. Strong vocabulary skills and knowledge of Greek/Latin root words have been demonstrated to improve students' SAT scores. My gifted students love to explore and research new topics, and these dictionaries will support their passion for learning.
