Hurricane Child and Gracefully Grayson are two wonderful and immersive novels that follow the stories of a gay, Black girl in the Virgin Islands and a quiet, trans girl in Illinois, respectively. To the detriment of the many students who can (and cannot) self-identify with their protagonists, stories like these are unfortunately not often found in the classroom. These two beautifully rich texts explore themes of self-acceptance, courage, love, friendship, racism, and trans and homophobia. The lap desks will be used during flexible seating work time to boost student focus and comfort. This type of physical differentiation supports students who have movement needs as well as students who don't but still find themselves benefiting from the additional movement and added comfort.
