Studies have shown that there are many benefits to exposing students to different genres of literature. The more books students read- the better readers and learners they will become! Yet, encouraging struggling readers to pick up a book for enjoyment can be very challenging for teachers. Why graphic novels? Graphic novels will bridge the gap between traditional and modern reading for all of my students. Most importantly this collection will bring stories to life and create lifelong readers. English language learners (ELL) will use the graphic novels not only to continue to improve fluency, but also to allow them to make meaning from the text with the assistance of the graphics. Graphic novels allow for high interest and high engagement without stigmatizing reluctant readers. Many students begin the year with: I hate to read, I'm not very good at reading, or Reading is boring. The addition of a graphic novel collection in my classroom will change the mindset of all hesitant readers, and delight students for years to come. Thank you for helping me create a home library away from home for so many deserving students!
