As a first-year teacher, I have a lot of expenses to cover to start my classroom. Since I work in a low-income district, my goal is to provide any supplies necessary for my students to learn, and while my wife couponed like crazy to cover most of the basic school supply expenses, I have yet to acquire any historical books on the subject matter I will be teaching. These books will give my students a true glimpse into the history of the United States--the good, the bad, and the ugly. Not only will it provide a basis for them to form their own opinions about various social studies topics, but it will also fulfill any Ohio learning standards they are required to meet. By having a library of great historical texts, I can allow my students to incorporate what they discover into interactive notebooks I will be implementing. My hope is to have my students help guide their learning through feedback on what interests them the most. We are a team, and I don't plan on standing in front of the class and talking at them all day. By having books in my classroom they can explore freely, my students can really help drive their education.
