In the Shadow of Liberty is an eye-opening book that tells the story of four slaves who were owned by American presidents. History textbooks often leave out chunks of information. Students learn about many heroic presidents such as George Washington and Thomas Jefferson but what they do not learn is that these heroic presidents also owned slaves. This book will help make a difference in my student's learning by shedding light on the truth about the black men and women who played a major role in the birth of our nation, but have been left out of our history textbooks. Every Friday after testing, I plan to create a literature circle in the classroom. We will do more than just read through the text. As a class we will analyze the text, apply it to our lives, and connect it to the standards we are covering in class. Students will be able to discuss freely as I guide them throughout the text with critical thinking questions.
