Bookworm Bonanza tasks students with choosing books that they enjoy to either read to themselves or with a family member. Once they have finished the book, they take a short 5 question quiz on Readn’Quiz for accountability. They earn points for each quiz that they pass. At the end of each quarter, their points turn into Bookworm Bucks. Each quarter, students are able to spend their Bookworm Bucks at the Bookworm Bonanza Store. The program is promoted weekly on our morning show with a weekly leaderboard. It has also been promoted with all calls, newsletters, and social media platforms. During our pilot, which started midway through the first quarter, we checked out over 800 more books between August 10 – October 15 in 2021 compared to 2019 (pre-covid). The program has received positive feedback from students, parents, and teachers. Students eagerly come to the library wanting to find books to read so that they can earn more points. One parent wrote, “This was a great idea. My son has been reading books every night without me having to say anything! He is determined to get the most points possible.” This relates to the objective because getting students excited about reading and families involved will increase students literacy skills.
