All of our students want to learn to play the ukulele at least once in their lives. What is a better time than being in Hawaii? Our classes only have a few ukuleles and there's not enough for every 3-5th grader to have their own individual ukulele in their classes. Students have expressed their desire to learn and perform on the ukuleles, especially those native to Hawaii. As they learn and progress on ukulele, they will be able to accompany along with students and songs for concerts, which will help them embrace team and independent work to build musicianship while getting comfortable performing in front of an audience. The students also have access to very few drums in the classroom. The drums that are in the classroom are outdated and have been collecting dust for years. Adding a new kind of drum, being the box drum will play many roles in music for the students. Since I am starting a music program because it hasn't been in the curriculum for three years, we are going back to the basic fundamentals of music being beat and rhythm, which drums are essential for. This will enhance the environment not only in the classroom, but on the concert stage as well. The technology in the school is very advanced and I don't have access to a cd player to play listening examples from cd's. Not only do students need to know what a cd player is but they need to be exposed to the records that obtain several listening examples pertaining to music history and content planned for their lessons. All of the above will also accomplish music art standards.
