I want my students to take a book like, "Yasmin" or "Sadiq" off the shelf and see themselves on the front cover. I want them to be excited to bring their book home and read it with their family! I want them to make connections and fall in love with characters that look and act just like them! Rudine Sims Bishop is known for saying books are, "Mirrors, windows and sliding glass doors," but a majority of the books in my library only provide mirrors for half of my student population. My students need books they can connect with, for it is this connection that amplifies their comprehension and helps them stay on the path to becoming life long readers and learners.
