The materials I have requested support an art-based treatment plan for a Behavioral Health Specialist to support a student's social and emotional learning at an Elementary School. I want to create an art corner in my small office, where there is an easel, a drop cloth, smocks to wear, and art supplies abundant to signal that this is where they are free to create and express themselves! My office is their safe and calming place where they are listened to, supported, and accepted, no matter what emotions or feelings they have, no matter what they are thinking. Art is powerful and can help young students express their emotions and feelings in ways that they cannot verbally. I want to give my students a space to create art freely and to learn about art. I want art to remind them of their power to create the life they want through their feelings and emotions. My students need to be reminded of the power that they have to be kind to and connect to themselves, socially engage with others and accept themselves for all that they are. Students have diverse strengths and abilities, and therefore need diverse ways of expressing themselves. Some students excel in math and science, some in reading, some in the arts and music, and some in all of those subjects! I hope that I can help my students learn self-acceptance of their feelings and emotions through art, as many of them experience stress in their regular classrooms and traditional subjects. Thank you for your time and consideration.
