I like to include a book in every lesson I teach. It provides the students with another format of learning and also helps with their literacy skills. One thing I have noticed about my school's music library is the lack of diversity within the materials. The books will help my students to see themselves in class and connect more with what I am trying to teach them. The puppets help to make the books an immersive experience and get them more involved in the lesson. Music is often focused on European Classical music that is composed by predominantly white men. I want to help change that narrative and show my kids just how wide of range music has. For example, I could use a book about a different culture to promote cultural diversity and exploration while also allowing students to see themselves in the book. From there, I would introduce cultural music, dances and instruments that will allow students to learn about other cultures around the world.
