During the pandemic, schools have been unpredictable and in many instances, learning has been interrupted, which can cause anxiety and stress for students. A big focus for my physical education program this school year is to emphasize the importance of social-emotional learning and self-care. Yoga mats will be used consistently throughout the day for all grade levels. Students will start and end each class with focused breathing, stretching, and mindful focus, and relaxation. Yoga mats will provide a personal space for kids to be successful. Later in the school year, a unit on yoga will be taught, and having individual yoga mats will provide a safe place for students to learn, practice, and apply the skills being taught. Yoga has several benefits that help support a child's development. Yoga and mindfulness have proven to benefit a child's focus and concentration, which will transfer into the classroom. Yoga also improves a child's flexibility, strength, and balance which overall improves a child's health. In addition to health benefits, yoga can improve a child's self-esteem and confidence. Lastly, yoga has many incredible benefits for kids with special needs.
