Throughout the school year, these books will be used as reading aloud to provide "mirrors and windows" for students. They will see people like themselves as well as experience new cultures. The act of reading aloud to students provides opportunities for new vocabulary acquisition and oral language development. It gives students an example of fluent reading, and for students who cannot read these independently, give them access to the rich and advanced text. The donation of these books will allow my students to learn about role models, like astronauts and engineers, and experience the joys of reading authentic, high-quality literature. They will be more motivated to read these books independently and work hard like the role models in many of these books. As my first graders listen to these stories, we will create a love for books that will keep them reading even after they leave my classroom.
