I want to be able to teach my fifth graders valuable life skills such as financial literacy through the utilization of a classroom store. Students will have the opportunity to earn "Brownie Bucks" for things like following SOPs (our school and classroom procedures), earning good grades on assessments, using study strategies they have been taught, helping others, cleaning up their area, completing assignments on time, participation...etc. Students will be able to spend their "money" on awesome snacks and prizes (gummy snacks, chips, slime, desk pets (animal erasers), and so much more! My goal is to highlight the positive behaviors I see on a daily basis, instead of focusing on the negative, all while teaching students how to be financially literate. In today's world, it is so easy to get caught up in the pessimistic mindset and hyper-focus on the negatives. I want my classroom to be one that is filled with rewards and positivity, not consequences and negativity. Students will learn financial literacy skills through the process of earning and spending their "money". Students will be shown all the prizes in advance, encouraged to save for the more expensive items. Students will also be required to keep track of their money in their own wallets (Ziplocs) and keep a ledger showing their balance at all times. I am excited for this project and an opportunity to teach a vital life skill in a fun and rewarding way.
