Immigration has always been a hot topic. Today, it continues to be. The Namesake addresses issues that help students understand what this experience looks like for many first and second generation Americans. Winner of the Pulitzer Prize, Jhumpa Lahiri lyrically expresses issues of acceptance and the American Dream, as well as personal issues like identity and finding purpose. Edmond is known as a pretty homogenous place, but our diversity (in our student population) is growing each day. Having this title would better prepare our students by giving them views from multiple generations of American immigrants. For students who are first, second (or even third) generation immigrants, it will allow them a chance for empathy and understanding. Great literature is all about understanding the human condition. As with any novel we read in AP English Language, we pair it with contemporary nonfiction articles, historical/biographical studies, and hands on activities/discussions that allow students to connect with the ideas from the story. Some lessons we have planned involve learning about cultural synthesis and relationships (in the story the Indian main character's favorite author is Russian). Gogol (the main character) is an architect, so incorporating architecture in one of our lessons is also a goal. Above all, our class focuses on teaching students to write clearly, effectively, and powerfully. Using models from her novel will allow us to show students what great writing looks like as well as focus on close reading of her text to see how she creates her story.
