The music classroom at Whittier Elementary is known as the Music Laboratory. It is extended and expanded upon in the performing art known as "band" during 5th and 6th grade. Similar to its counterpart, band is a gathering of different-minded people whose collective brain waves flow together via active imaginations to experiment and experience. A xylophone is the percussion section's instrument of pinnacle quality. Any student in 5th and 6th grade who expresses and pursues interest in becoming a percussionist begins on mallet percussion. They learn music theory: the writing, reading, and comprehension of music. By doing so, the student transforms into the quintessential musician as the xylophone becomes the connecting device to all other instruments in the percussion family (timpani, chimes, even rhythmic percussion). With an instrument of this quality as a mode of inspiration in the music room elementary students prepare sheet music, hone advanced techniques, and strengthen fine motor skills used in the great beyond of junior high, high school, and collegiate band programs.
