Fifth grade is an important year for scientific thinkers. This is the year many students discover their love of STEM subjects, as they begin to dive deeper into the intricacies of science. Keeping students engaged as they explore these concepts requires a variety of resources that help students to access background knowledge and add on to what they already know. Additionally, fifth grade is the first time students take a standardized test in science. The Florida Statewide Science Assessment (FSSA) assesses scientific understanding for science standards covered in grade levels three, four, and five. We spend the year working with new fifth grade content and reviewing fair game testable standards from third and fourth grade to build the necessary scientific knowledge for students to be successful answering the questions on the FSSA. While it is essential that students have a strong foundation in scientific knowledge, their ability to read also plays an important role in their success on this test. I will use the NewPath Learning centers, Nonfiction Comprehension Quickie Cards, and Meet the Standards Energy Kit during small group instructional time to help my students build scientific comprehension. The NewPath learning centers come in a ready-to use zippered pouch and provide an opportunity for building scientific understanding in a game format. I will use these in teacher-directed small groups, student-led small groups, for early finishers, and continual review of important concepts throughout the year. I’ve also included a math center to build skills with collecting and displaying data, which is a year-long skill we use in science. I will use the Nonfiction Comprehension Quickie cards from Lakeshore Learning to help students build the reading skills that impact their success in science. The Meet the Standards Energy Kit will give my students an opportunity for hands-on exploration during small groups.
