My students gain a feeling of security from reading their first language of Spanish--when we read these bilingual books together, my students are able to approach reading from a place of confidence, which will help them become lifelong readers of English and Spanish. I want to make sure my students are able to approach reading and speaking English from a place of comfort, and these books will allow them to do that. I also want to make sure that my students know that their language and culture are valued, celebrated, and important in our classroom--seeing the words they're familiar with alongside English in classic stories, like Corduroy and The Snowy Day, and nonfiction science texts about birds, mammals, reptiles, and more, will help me show that to them.
