In a recent seminar Dr. Linda Karges-Bone explained the detrimental effect that adverse childhood experiences have on learning. One way to turn that around is to provide novel (fun and surprising) experiences. She highly recommended having an Art Cart, and she mentioned scented markers several times. The Art Cart is used at the end of a lesson in which the students can create an art project to show understanding of the concept taught. I love the idea of providing happy and creative childhood experiences in school. I have requested several art supplies that many of my students have never used. I am looking forward to their happy anticipation whenever they see the art cart coming out!
