The school day is very long and demanding for students. These hands-on morning bins will allow my students to have a soft landing to their morning, while also promoting a highly engaged learning environment. The morning bins provide a sense of routine in that the students will know what is expected of them as they enter the classroom, without requiring an overload of academic demand just as their day is beginning. These tasks allow them to use their imagination and see themselves as builders, mathematicians, architects, and artists. They can be calming sensory tools due to their colors and feel. It also gives the students a sense of power in the room as they are permitted to choose activities in which to engage themselves. The variety allows them to have a favorite or to rotate through many options. The bins also provide teamwork and cooperation activities, as they build large towers together or share pieces. It is crucial for me as their teacher to find ways to allow their brains and bodies the academic break they need, while still fostering their overall growth and development. It is crucial that we find moments in our day to allow our students to simply exist as creative and explorative humans.
