Writing continues to be an area of acute struggle for my students who often remain several years behind in terms of their writing skills by the time they arrive in the high school. Students will explore various points of intersection of people of African American descent in the United States, their history with social justice movements or the medical establishment in class. Students also will receive writing support from our Writing Center. By building off of the argumentative research writing unit from the Engage NY ELA curriculum that we use, these materials will make a significant difference by allowing students to pursue topics of interest to them while providing them with a platform and vehicle to focus on skill development and writing growth all in the name of joyful, reasoned advocacy and argumentation; these materials will also allow students to receive ongoing, targeted support from our Writing Center after school.
