Through my English course, we study societal issues and how they affect our society. We study Middle Eastern terrorism denying females an education, how prejudice ignited a Holocaust, and I would like to fast forward from the racial injustice of the 1950’s, “To Kill a Mockingbird,” and use the relevance of Bryan Stevenson’s true story of fighting to end mass incarceration and racial inequality to positively impact my students. As humans, we are more alike than we are different and this story is one of unity, acceptance, and doing the right thing. Through their culminating English project, my students will tackle a societal issue, research, and present how they can and will be a voice of change.
