For so long, students have usually read the same thing as their peers in English class via a class set of novels. But what happens when they're simply not interested in the book or story? Why can't we allow them to choose books they want to read while also teaching them important skills? Independent reading is a huge part of my daily classroom. But my classroom is severely lacking in the number of books representing multiple genres. What I'm most interested in reading is not always what my students are most interested in reading. Sadly, my classroom library has (until recently) reflected my interests and not so much my students' interests. That has changed, but I simply can't afford to go all out and purchase the number of books my students have requested. The books I've listed have been suggested by many of my students, from SPED to general education to honors. This is their list and my hope is that I can get these books in their hands to help them develop the same love for reading that I have.
