This culturally relevant text will help students improve their reading skills, as well as consider point of view, character development, key ideas and details, as well as author choices in regards to craft and structure. They will also demonstrate the ability to cite sources and incorporate outside texts into their own writing. Students will also explore their own identities, cultural backgrounds, and assumptions about those they interact with. The text will come alive for them as they create zines, write one-pagers where they can draw what they imagine characters look like, and put together playlists of songs they feel demonstrate characters in the book as well as their own identities.
