My special education social skills class is all about teaching students to interact with peers appropriately, however for my students, who dislike or struggle with socialization, school and forced socialization can be stressful and frustrating. Many of my students also struggle to identify and self-regulate emotions and feelings, and part of my job is to teach them healthy ways to calm down when they are upset or too wound up to focus on academics. I would like to set my room up with a variety of calming sensory tools that encourage self-regulation. Some of the items on my list will help my room feel more inviting, safe, and comfortable. Others are items that students can use independently either while working to help them focus, or in a "zen corner" when they are feeling too upset or wound up to focus and need to take a minute to calm down.
