Students need a safe place and the right materials to understand and express their emotions. As a school counselor, I am always looking for resources that accomplish these goals. With new books that support social and emotional growth, I can connect with students regarding specific challenges they are facing. For example, if a student is dealing with anxious thoughts, I can use the book Ruby Finds a Worry to show them they are not alone in their struggle, and open the conversation to discuss ways of managing it. With a book like the Invisible String, students can know that even when they are far away from a loved one, or a loved one has died, they are always connected in their hearts. Books spark conversation and connection when students need it most. Another component of helping students connect with their emotions is providing them with materials to create art. Pictures and art projects are perfect when students aren't sure of what they want to say or how they feel. My students will love the various resources I will be providing with this project!
