In our collaborative classroom, students work in teams over the course of our units to build models of real-world phenomena. We are tackling cancer, solving the climate crisis, and feeding the world without destroying it. These whiteboards allow students to revisit their hypotheses at the beginning of class and revise as they are presented/discover new information. The whiteboards, besides an excellent modeling tool, are a symbol of science AND life; no "mistake", no "wrong" answer is absolutely permanent - it can be erased if you address it. The whiteboards allow me to see exactly what they are doing, as well as provide an easy place for them to show and share their work. Describing a potential cancer treatment results in miscommunication between students but showing a modeled diagram of the phenomena is clear. I will use the whiteboards as a formative assessment of student progress. I will see their misunderstandings or holes in their thinking which I get to address in the next lesson. If we are going to have young people who are going to solve our planet's biggest challenges, I need a clear way of understanding where my kids are at. By donating to our project, you will help increase student learning, scientific modeling, and team collaboration.
