Like many others navigating teaching in a pandemic, we have had to make many changes in music class over the past year and a half. All of these changes were necessary to ensure our students' safety, and even when, last year, our students were unable to learn to play the recorder, they still made music like rock stars. These students, who have had to deal with so much, deserve a formative instrument learning experience, and the ukulele is the perfect instrument for that experience. Our 3rd and 4th graders can learn how to read musical notation from the staff as they learn songs, and our 5th and 6th graders can also use these instruments to learn about chords and accompaniment. In addition, all of our students will also learn grit and self-sufficiency as they tackle this new instrument--and they'll have a lot of fun learning something new, too!
