My first grade students work very hard to get themselves smart by reading, writing, listening, and thinking. They gather on the carpet daily to laugh, wonder, notice, and explore new big books and revisit old ones. Big Books have big text and big pictures so all the children can see and enjoy. Revisiting these books, we examine story structure, spelling patterns, vocabulary, and so much more. On their own, my first graders enjoy exploring new books and sharing their new learning ("WOWs") with other children. They know that in order to be better readers they must practice the reading strategies that that they learn with new books everyday. They have grown so much this year and I am so proud of them! My school is located in a middle class neighborhood and one third of my students receive free or reduced lunch. These books will be shared with 6 other first grade classrooms at my school.
