Students need to relieve stress or just have something in their hands so they can focus on what needs to be done in the classroom. I have also found that getting a kid to laugh by giving them a silly small "prize" like a blue alien or a giraffe contributes to building relationships with my students and allows them to feel comfortable with me. Laughter in the classroom is so important. Learning is supposed to be fun and I try to foster that atmosphere through the work that we do but also by showing students that it's really ok to be goofy. No one will judge you in my class.
