Approximately 1/3 of food waste ends up in landfills. Students in my culinary class are concerned about food waste during their class periods. One method we decided that could help combat the food waste issue is to compost. Since we do not have an outdoor composter, we decided a tabletop compost system would be a great way to reduce our food waste. I am asking for funds to purchase a tabletop compost machine Vitamix FoodCycler FC-50 and a covered bin to hold our compost. This composter is an indoor food waste solution that cuts out mess and hassle. This website does a great job explaining how the machine works to break down food scraps into usable compost for a garden. Through this lesson, students will be able to learn how their food gets from farm to table. They will see how food scraps are turned into valuable nutrients for foods they are growing in our classroom garden. Additionally, we will share the compost with students, staff, and the community. My goal is to show students how they can make a small difference that can have ripple effects. Thank you for considering to fun this project!
