I strive to provide my students with opportunities to learn and try new things, discover truths about themselves, and develop their passions. As part of my effort to achieve this goal, I intend to create a stellar makerspace. I am fortunate to have a large library/learning commons, and I want to fill it with a variety of hands-on, creative activities. My initial project is creating a sewing station for students to learn and practice sewing skills. With the decrease in home economics and similar classes in public schools, too many students are missing out on learning key skills that make them more self-sufficient while living independently. A sewing station combines the arts and life skills and can be used with a wide variety of projects. The sewing station will guide my students through the basic knowledge of sewing, and the opportunity to create something on their own will foster their self-confidence and possibly even inspire some to explore the field of design. Students will use the Singer sewing machine along with available patterns, fabrics, threads, and tools to create a project of their choice. I will have books and videos on hand for guidance and project ideas. Students may choose to simply practice certain stitches or using the machine, or they may create a tangible object they can take with them or put on display here in the library/learning commons.
