Self-Portraits are a really big component of visual arts classes. I've taught them using photographs and I've taught them using mirrors. What I've come to find is that using mirrors seems to heighten my kids' awareness of what they really look like: the flaws, the imperfections, the great bone structure, the pretty curve of the lips... and these mirrors help them to really see themselves beyond just lines and shapes. Watching the students analyze themselves and their personal aesthetics is an amazing experience, and their demonstrations of skill and growth astounds me each time.
